G'day everyone,

I ripped out some words and thoughts from the ageing thread here, as I want to collaborate people's thoughts and ideas of opportunities to go overseas and take action, one way or another.

I'm thinking that if people know of organisations that regularly run 'trips' to experience poverty, voluntarily build for orphanages or the poor in general, to assist in school teaching or anything else like this, we can make a list as a resource for those seeking these opportunities.

If we get some sort of structure happening it'd make this thread a whole lot easier to read... so we should start with the organisations name, then probably the name of the trip or program they run (or whether it's just an irregular or one-off opportunity), the country where it's all happening, write the purpose of the trip if it's known, and lastly link to the related website if it exists. Oh hey, if we're feeling really crazy why not write the cost of the trip if we know it too!

These can just be some guidelines and ideas... I might polish this up a bit later on when I'm not so tired, and I'll chuck in some examples too.

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

Just when I thought it was safe to go to bed, another three popped into my head!

I'll edit these later because I really need to sleep... but a short-list of the info for now:

Urban Neighbours of Hope,

And another:

Churches of Christ Overseas Aid (COCOA), (GMP and OMB)http://www.cocoa-s-e-asia.org/?mod=detail&par=1&chi=6

Probably something with Amnesty International and Red Cross. I might look at the Micah Challenge website tomorrow and the MPH site to see if they've got anything...

So I was having this conversation with my Mum when I found out that I didn't get Youth Ambassador this year, and she told me that maybe I should start looking to go with other organisations...

In my reply I pretty much told her that I don't want to go with another organisation until i go wiith World Vision, because I feel that I owe it to WV to go and see THEIR work first, and be an advocate for what THEY are doing first! I feel like WV, well VGen, gave me the opportunity to step into this world of activism and belief, when I first wanted to start diong this sort of work, they were the first to take me in, so yeah... I am going to keep applying for YA until I am too old, and thenI might start looking outside the square...

But that doesn't mean that i don't think other people should go out into other organisations, I think that is fantastic, I just don't personally think that I can right now! :)

Hmmm, yeah I sort of understand what you're saying- it's like a loyalty thing for being involved with World Vision and that makes sense. I've been doing the famine yearly since I was in primary school (the good old 24 hour famine in year 4... he he), and so I'm not suggesting that I or anyone should disregard or favour any particular organisation, it's just a matter of lining up an organisations views and beliefs with your own - and I think multiple organisations do that for me.

Think of this way perhaps - all international aid organisations are like a hardware store... there are heaps of different departments that sell different products and work slightly differently... but in the end, they're all under the same roof and are working together to do the same thing. That's a terrible analogy, but it helps me to not worry whether I go with these people or those people with this or that! As long as it's doing the right think, that's what counts.

Needless to say, ANY overseas experience can tie in with educating other people in any organisation like those listed above - if an opportunity with World Vision slips by, you could still take another opportunity and talk about it in your Vision Group or whatever. :) Like I said, it's all under the same roof!

So that's basically my extra 2 cents, I think if you're still able to apply for YA then keep going for it!! However... if you miss out and get too old (like me, I've got wrinkles now LOL) then this thread might just come in very handy. Thumbs Up

I hope that World Vision will continue also to offer the self-funded Study Tour thing like they did this year with Vanuatu and the 'education is for everyone' thing. I would have gone for that if I wasn't already going to be in the country... but I think that's also an awesome alternative to YA.

It just means you've gotta save some beans for the plane ticket and all the rest...

I think, tails, that you have a good mindset - very loyal and I understand your point of view. However, I also think that, very similar to what Daleet has said, there are so many opportunities out there and I wouldn't be close minded to just World Vision, although this is where alot of the passion and education starts, i.e. 40 hour famine. Daleet is right - we are all working for the same thing, a better future for all, and I think that's something you need to consider when you choose what you want to do and things you want to achieve, especially YA! (I have next year as my last year to apply!)

Youth Ambassador is a great chance - but there are heaps out there! Keep us updated about what your up to though tails, if I don't sound too nosy, because it's very inspirational!

And if I come across any opportunities, I'll definitely post them up here, because I for one, am very interested in what else is out there! :)

Yeah I know it is a really closed minded wa of looking at it, but it's just what i feel that I personally have to do. . . As I said, I 199% support any of you that go with other organisations, I think it is equalllyas great!! :)

And I will keep an eye out for other opportunities for you so that I can post them here for you of course!!

:) It wasn't criticizing at all! I understand - i just get very focused on one thing sometimes, and don't like to deviate from that path to much... And once I have gone either with World Vision or gone to visit World Vision's work, i will be more than happy to go with other organisatons! :)

Daniel - have you found any opportunities that strike your fancy? I guess around Christmas/New Years won't be the best time, but I mean in preparation for the coming few years or so?
