Fairly Local

To celebrate the second week of Fairtrade Fortnight, we're excited to turn the spotlight on a new website & iPhone app designed by young gun Scott Sanders that helps you find Fairtrade products and cafes near you: Fairly Local.

We all want to buy stuff. In our lives in Australia it’s kinda unavoidable.
But when you want to buy Fairtrade products, the challenge has always been trying to find them.
Well, thanks to young gun Australian web designer Scott Sanders, this challenge might one day be behind us.

We caught up with Scott to find out why he’s set up Fairly Local...

2008 Youth Ambassador Scott

“I've always had a passion for using what I have in my hands to make a difference. A few years ago I was getting quite involved in two things: social justice and web development. I wanted to find a way those two passions together, in a meaningful or world-changing way. I also had a growing love for great (and ethical) coffee, and wanted a site that told me where to find my nearest Cafe, wherever I was.

So my solution searching brain started ticking over, I began thinking of a site that would help people find Fairtrade products in their suburbs, a site which is based upon the contributions of the community."

When in doubt... google it

So, I had an idea, I had a name, I just was way out of depth in my web development knowledge to make it happen. So I did what all good Gen-Y's do when they don't know something.... I googled it. Within six months I had a working v1.0 of the site, and then kept refining it over the next 18 months to where it is now.

About a month ago I decided that it needed a companion iPhone app, but I'd never done that before either.... so I googled it!

Basically, I saw a need, I had a passion, and I had something in my hands that I wanted to use to make a difference in the world. Add all that together and you get Fairly Local!

The name?

The name was next, I was down in Hobart, working with World Vision, dwelling on the idea in my spare time and stumbled across "Fairly Local".

So, what can you do with Fairly Local?

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
