Toilet Door Poster 2007

Okay so this might not seem the most glamorous choice, but let me ask you this. How many of you can say you’ve never read what’s on the back of a toilet door? My bet, is that it’s no one.

Winners 2007!

Face It by Linda P, Art4Aid 2007

This category has been won by Linda P of Plympton in SA with her very cool 'Face It' entry.
Christian G from Brunswick in Vic has won second prize!

Linda's poster will be finding it's way onto toilet doors across the country and Christian may be working with the Stir team more in 2008. Both win a sweet Stir Tee and a 12 month subscription to New Internationalist.

What did Linda say about 'Face It'?
In this design I wanted to make the facts clear that 6000 people die every day due to lack of clean water and sanitation and even though we cant see them (portrayed as only being outlines in my design) it doesn’t mean they’re not there. By clearly providing facts I’m encouraging viewers to at least have a think about what is going on in this world we live in. The aim of this design is not to make anyone feel guilty about the lives they live but to just want to find out more information and be inspired by the fantastic work of World Vision.

A few years back I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to do Missionary work in rural India. This was indeed an eye opening experience and not a day has gone past where I haven’t thought about it. All the poverty and homelessness just broke my heart. There is so much poverty that everyone just seems like a number as they all want the same thing = clean water and sanitation. I have reflected this in my design by giving the number 6000 an orange outline like the figures to show people that they are not just numbers but individual people just like you and me."

Rationale

Whether it’s graffiti of protest posters or advertisements; toilet doors are the best place to place your message because people like to read something when they’re sitting there. And you can be the one who gives them that read!

But let’s not give them just anything to read, let’s talk about an important issue like Water and Sanitation (an ideal spot to do it, don’t you think?), because...

  • Over 6,000 children die each day due to lack of clean water and sanitation.
  • Women and children have to walk miles each day to collect back-breaking amounts of water that will only make them and their families sick.
  • 2.5 billion people live without a clean or private place to go to the toilet.

We need to raise awareness about the water crisis, amongst ourselves and our leaders. We need to make Australia stand at the forefront of water policy and begin to make a difference in our world.

Here’s how…

There are no strict guidelines with this project, other than it needs to be an A3 poster size and it needs to feature the Stir logo somewhere. Other than that, it’s up to your imagination.

Prizes

The winning poster will blitz an Australia wide advocacy campaign in April 2008. To start with, at least 300,000 copies of the poster will be printed and distributed as an insert in the World Vision News magazine and will no doubt be blu-tacked lovingly on toilet doors around the country.

The winning poster will also appear in Desktop magazine.
