Stir your School or University

Using your school or university is probably one of the best ways of going about stirring. Because you're there so often, you can easily find your window of opportunity.  Whether it's in the classroom or an out of class event, you have the means to do it!

You can use your school as a vehicle to combat poverty:

  • Lobby your school to ensure that all your uniforms (including sporting) are produced under fair conditions.
To get your message across you may need to gather support from fellow students and even stage a campaign. This could involve posters and fliers, organised debates and letter writing to the heads of your school.
Check out Fair Wear to see if your school clothes are being produced fairly.
  • Make sure your classmates know about the realities of poverty. Speak to your teachers about devoting some class time to such issues. World Vision has a resource called The Main Game that they could use to teach about the Millennium Development Goals.
  • Talk to someone about getting your school involved in World Vision's School to School program and let your school help another in need.

For Schools and Universities

You can use your school/university simply to raise awareness. Where else do you have the possibility to impact that many people at one time?

You could:

  • Have a table dedicated to poverty/Stir/World Vision at your O-week festivities or at your school fair. Include ideas for ways people might get involved - for example Stir sign-up sheets, or child sponsorship forms.  Contact the Stir Editor if you would like some sent to you.
  • Make up fliers and posters to put up around your school. Even if they're not promoting anything more than an idea, getting the hundreds/thousands of people who walk past them every day to stop for a second and think about their world is a step in the right direction.
  • Use your school/uni to promote an event.
  • Use your school/uni to promote and start a group.
